Provence, land of castles

Between history, art and heritage, visits to the châteaux of Provence continue unabated. People come for the beauty of the sites and for the pleasure of strolling through their parks and gardens.

A few châteaux in Provence

From the best-known, such as the Château des Baux de Provence, a monumental fortress from which you can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view over the Baux valley, to the Château de Vins-sur-Caramy, first abandoned and now restored, which takes us back to medieval times and the delicacy of the Renaissance, the Provencal region is bursting with buildings, each more beautiful than the last.
The village of Entrecasteaux is built around a fortress. Its private château, built in the XIᵉ century but restored in the Renaissance, features gardens inspired by the style of Le Nôtre. Many others will take you back in time, such as :
Valbelle Castlewhose remains bear witness to a history worthy of fairy tales
- The Château de Pontevès, with its exceptional views over the surrounding plain.
- At Château Saint Martin de Pallière, you'll discover an architectural gem, unique in the region, with its underground cathedralThis architectural curiosity dates from 1747 and was designed to meet the water needs of the château's gardens.
- Château de la Verdière, an ancient fortress dating back to the year 1000 that was modified in the 18ᵉ century into a Florentine-style palace.
- The Château Ducal d'Uzès, also known as the "Duchy", was built on an ancient Roman camp. This exceptional castle will take you through the ages, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

Château in Provence or wine estate in Provence?

A wine estate is not necessarily a château in the sense that we understand it. In other words, ramparts, imposing gates and other towers.
"Bottled at the château" is an appellation of origin (AOP or AOC) which sets out clearly defined criteria to protect the name of certain products in France.

So why a château on the label of a wine from Provence?

In France, a law regulates the terminology used on the labels of bottles of wine and in order for the words "Château" to be indicated, a number of criteria must be met:
- The wine must be AOP or AOC. Appellation d'origine contrôlée (term used in France) and appellation d'origine protégée (term used at European level).
- The grapes used to make the wine must have been grown and harvested on the estate, not bought. A wine made from purchased grapes is a vin de négoce.
- Vinification must be carried out at the heart of the estate.
